Turn on burst or Live Photo
Burst captures the fast, unrepeatable moments. On iPhone, holding the shutter button (or sliding it, depending on your settings) fires a burst.
Tap to focus on the face
Tapping the pet's face on screen locks focus there so the eyes are sharp even if the pet shifts slightly.
Add light rather than zoom
Digital zoom throws away detail. Move closer, or move to a brighter spot, instead of pinching in.
